“By the lines which are going around, we see the [plant’s] effort to grow. There are meandering lines, showing obstacles, but still it is growing nicely.”
This fascinating sculpture would be a perfect centrepiece, with the swirling lines giving a different view from every angle. It’s also a very versatile size, depending on what height of plinth is used.
The complexity of the composition is staggering, when you consider that Willard has sculpted this piece from a single solid piece of stone. Luckily for him, this lovely colourful variety of serpentine stone is found very close to his home.
Avocado serpentine, named for its green and yellow colouring, is very hard and impermeable. As a result, it is naturally frost-resistant and can be displayed outdoors – even in temperate climates.
