Shona sculptor Charles Kowo from Zimbabwe

Charles Kowo

Charles Kowo was born in 1980 in Mutoko in north-eastern Zimbabwe, a stunning mountainous region where purple lepidolite and the serpentine stone known as leopard rock are found.

When his father died in 1992, Charles’ mother moved back to her parents in Guruve in northern Zimbabwe, taking the eight children with her.

Guruve is the main town in the Great Dyke area, which has some very interesting geology. Unsurprisingly, there are many stone sculptors based there. Charles met Obert Marime, an experienced sculptor, and was very impressed and interested in this art form. Following this life-changing event, Charles asked Obert to teach him to sculpt. Obert very kindly agreed, so from 2002-2005 Charles worked as Obert’s assistant, learning the basic sculpting techniques.

With Obert’s encouragement, Charles progressed to working on his own pieces. Since 2005, he has been creating his own work, putting his own ideas into three-dimensional form. Charles is now firmly established in his own right as an independent artist. Shona Sculpture Gallery is delighted to be showing his work.

We have more super sculptures by Charles Kowo available through our other company, Guruve, an online gallery based in the UK.
