Shona sculptor Isaac Choloka from Zimbabwe

Isaac Choloka

Isaac Choloka was born in 1979 in Chegutu in Mashonaland West, a productive agricultural area in central Zimbabwe. Isaac has three sisters and four brothers and he is the youngest child. He studied up to O-Levels in Chegutu. However, when he was sixteen, his family moved to Chitungwiza, a town near near Harare.

Isaac first made a name for himself as an artist while at high school in Chegutu; he drew contemporary cartoons. Therefore, when he came to Harare, he made a beeline for the National Gallery to meet other artists. Happily, he met various stone sculptors, which ignited a passion for stone sculpting. Isaac has been sculpting since 1998.

Selected group exhibitions:

  • Second Prize, Brock Awards, Chitungwiza Arts Centre, Zimbabwe (2017)
  • First participation in the National Arts Merit Awards (NAMA), Harare, Zimbabwe – organized by the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (2013)
  • WEAA exhibition at Morgan State University (WEAA is the MSU radio station), Baltimore, MA, USA (2012)
  • New gallery opening – Symbols in Stone, Germany (via Chitungwiza Industrial and Travel Expo) (2011)

Isaac is now established as a contemporary sculptor creating abstract artworks. His trademark style, with bold geometric shapes, clean lines and strong contrasts, has a universal appeal.
