Jetro’s confidence as sculptor shines through in this piece, with its sense of harmony and balance. He has captured in stone a private moment between lovers, and given them a tenderness and mutual delight. Additionally, he’s used contrasting textures, typical of the Shona sculpture movement as a whole, for extra interest.

Jetro has sculpted this lovely sculpture from a single piece of springstone, and the different colours come from different finishing techniques. He has sanded and then waxed the face and hands with clear wax to bring out the natural colour of the stone. By contrast, the clothes have only been sanded. He has picked out the detail of the hair with a punch and hammer.

Springstone is the local Zimbabwean name for a hard variety of serpentine stone. It is suitable for outdoor display, even in temperate climates. The green veins in the stone are entirely natural and are not cracks or lines of weakness.
